Why are Christmas trees plastic and frosted in snow

When they could be eucalypts, black by bushfires glow.

And instead of tinsel, those fairylights twinkling,

Let’s see some funnelwebs, pedipalps menacing.

We don’t build snowpeople, bent-carrot nose,

Castles of sand on the beaches, burning toes.

Why stuff a turkey ‘cos some kid was born?

Get busy with barbecues, beer and fresh prawns.

From humble beginnings, colonial adversity,

This land, many-coloured, celebrates its diversity.

Room in our backyard for more, bring your dog!

But don’t piss in our pool;

and bring your own grog.
